Software Development Manager - Jersey

We have a new full-time vacancy in our Jersey office for a Software Development Manager.

Webreality is a busy, thriving and growing digital agency. It’s a fun and rewarding place to work. We service over 175 clients, with multiple project teams working on website builds, digital marketing campaigns, social media strategies, content production and custom software development.

Building websites and web software is where Webreality started in 2000, and it remains absolutely at the core of our client relationships. We’ve been managing websites for many of our clients for over fifteen years. Due to continuing growth in demand from both existing and new clients, and corresponding growth in the size of our team of developers, we’ve decided to appoint our first Software Development Manager to help us ensure our business continues to thrive.

The role

This exciting new role involves acting as manager and mentor to Webreality’s developers, with the goal of delivering the best operational outcomes from the existing team, and ensuring the company can foresee and respond to evolving resourcing requirements. It’s primarily an inward-facing role, although it is possible that some client-facing work will be involved where direct involvement in major projects is required.

To be eligible, you will need to demonstrate a successful track record as a manager and mentor to developers of web or other software over a period of at least three years. You will also be able to show a relevant set of mature capabilities as a web or software developer, ideally (but not necessarily) in a stack similar to Webreality’s.

To succeed in this role, you will enjoy and thrive on a balance between technical and people management work. You will have excellent communication skills, a commercial mind, and you’ll thrive in a dynamic, busy team. You will also have the maturity and professionalism to be able to work effectively with people at all levels inside Webreality and in our client organisations.

Primary responsibilities

The Software Development Manager is the professional and personal mentor to all developers in the business. Management tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Day-to-day supervision of all developers, including oversight of task and project take-on, and monitoring of workloads and delivery timelines
  • Monitoring the quality and quantity of delivered work at project level and overall
  • Onboarding new employees
  • Setting and monitoring individual developer learning and performance objectives
  • Managing the periodic review meetings process for all developers
  • Maintaining employees’ personal records in our HR records system
  • Acting as key technical contact with the Production Manager to ensure effective matching of development resource with client and internal project demand
  • Continuously assessing the adequacy and capability of the development team and making related recruitment and learning recommendations to the board via the Technical Director.

The Software Development Manager will also act as lead developer on a portfolio of client and internal projects, and project work will make up no less than half of your day-to-day work in order to keep your development skills in tip top condition. Development tasks and responsibilities will also include:

  • Undertaking the requirements gathering, specification generation, and development of complex projects and ensuring that all learning is disseminated to the team
  • Contributing to the company’s core Umbraco code base, so that new features and bug fixes are available to everyone in the team.
What we're looking for
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an equivalent management role
  • Exceptional people management skills
  • Excellent development skills across all tools and code bases in use by Webreality (C# (.NET Framework and .NET 6/7), Umbraco 7+, CSS/SASS, Razor/Blazor, Git and Git flow, Visual Studio and VS Code, Figma, React and Angular, Webpack and npm/NodeJS, Windows Server, SQL Server)
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of web hosting technologies
  • A deep understanding of web security and the fundamentals of “secure by design”
  • The ability to convert client requirements into software specification documents
  • The ability to design software and data schemas from a specification document
  • Extensive knowledge of the full range of client technologies in use by Webreality
  • Advanced problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management
  • The ability to balance multiple priorities
  • The ability to work efficiently and productively under time pressure
  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members, other areas of the business and clients

  • Willingness to take responsibility
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Humour under pressure
  • Ability to thrive on continuous change.
